 CORONAVIRUS FACTS

COVID-19 is the infectious disease caused by the most recently discovered coronavirus. WATCH THE VIDEO

Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses which may cause illness in animals or humans.  In humans, several coronaviruses are known to cause respiratory infections ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases such as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS). This new virus and disease were unknown before the outbreak began in Wuhan, China, in December 2019. COVID-19 is now a pandemic affecting many countries globally.

Now lets check out some important facts about corona virus.

  • Why the name Corona?

The name “Coronavirus” is derived from Latin word ‘Corona’ meaning crown. This is because the virus has the appearance of a crown when observed under the electron microscope.

  • Mechanism of Infection.

The spikes of the virus imitates the molecule of a useful substance, so that the human cells pull the virus into themselves. This is how infection occurs. To watch the animation video jump to third chapter of the video CLICK HERE or simply check out the description box.

  • Related to the SARS Virus.

SARS-COV-1 that caused SARS in 2002 and the SARS-COV-2 that is causing the pandemic are similar in terms of structure and genetic composition. SARS-COV-1 is more lethal with higher death rate. However the rate of transmission is lower compared to SARS-COV-2.

  • Tests on Covid-19.

There are three types of tests –

     i)Antibody test

     ii) Antigen assay test  &

     iii) RT-PCR test

Antibody test involves the detection of antibodies in blood samples. This method is currently not preferred due to occurrence of false positive cases.

Antigen test and PCR tests are done on swab samples.

Antigen Assay Test – This is faster but there are chances of false negative results.

RTPCR – This is the recommended test but time consuming.

GENEXPERT & TRUENAAT are pcr tests which give faster results but are more expensive(optional)

  •  Cause of Death.

Our immune system responds to foreign particles such as bacteria or viruses entering our body. When the coronavirus reaches the lungs the immune system responds. This interaction can result in the formation of fluid in our lungs. Rapid progression of disease leading to severe accumulation of fluid within lungs results in acute respiratory distress syndrome or A R D S.
