  • The Invention of  Hand Sanitizer.

Long before it was no secret that alcohol killed germs - but there was no real way to apply it on the go, and at home.

In 1966 however, a nursing student named Lupe Hernandez from Bakersfield, California, found out that alcohol could be delivered in a gel - thus discovering hand sanitizer. Originally it was only used in hospital settings, until it became commercialized by companies like Purell and Gojo in 1988.

  • Why does Sanitizer expire?

Alcohol is volatile meaning they evaporate quickly. So as time goes on alcohol in Sanitizers will evaporate and make the Sanitizer ineffective.

  • Friction Phenomenon.

Yeah, that’s right. Sanitizer contains alcohol which has very low boiling point, so if you run it on your palm, in between your fingers, heat is generated due to friction. The heat evaporates alcohol and take germ particles with them. That’s how it works.

  • Alternate uses of  Hand Sanitizer.

Other than disinfecting your hand Sanitizer can be used for cleaning windows and mirror, removing marker stains from white boards, wall and clothes, useful for removing fingerprints from phones, sunglasses and stainless steel. It can be also used to relieve the itch of mosquito bites.

  • Hidden dangers of Sanitizer.

Do not completely depend on sanitizers for keeping hands clean and dirt free, if there is visible dirt you must use soap and water .Besides accidental consumption inhaling or entry of sanitizer into eyes can cause breathing and eye irritation hence it's best to keep away from children. Don't forget that it's alcohol so people should use carefully and keep away from candles and gas appliances.
