International space station

International space station is a multi national project between 5 space agencies, NASA(USA), Roscosmos(Russia), JAXA(Japan), ESA(Europe) and CSA(Canada). The station is used to conduct scientific experiments.

  • The International space station is the largest manmade object in space .

The station spans the area of a US football field. It is a system of labs, living quarters and control rooms.

 

  • 240 individuals from 19 countries have visited the International space station.

These include long-term crew, short term visitors and space tourists. Currently there are 5 members on board, 3 from USA and 2 from Russia.

 

  • It is the most expensive man made structure.

The station cost 160 billion $ with the United States alone contributing 100 billion $.  

 

  • Astronauts can sleep in any position.

Due to negligible gravity, Astronauts can sleep vertically or horizontally as they won’t be able to feel any difference. They usually zip themselves into a sleeping bag every night so they don’t float around in their sleep.

 

  • Earth days and station days are not the same.

The station moves around the earth in just 90 minutes. As a result the crew experiences about 16 sunrises and sunsets during a 24 hour earth day.
